What Is A Shock Dynamometer "Dyno"
The client, JasonTimmerman, needs a device that would assist him in making critical decisions on the race car. Jason currently cannot test his rebuild-able Penske shocks without being in racing condition. The need for a testing apparatus, a shock dyno, is necessary so the team can maintain a competitive edge on the rival racers. The client will also gain knowledge of shock performance and abilities. This is done at an effective savings of human life and of a car. Statistics from, “Something About Something Racin’ Stock Car”, has stated that on average 14 drivers die from crashes yearly; which doesn’t sound like many but if we compare that to football players, racing is 5 times more deadly.
Our client Jason has expressed an interest in designing a shock dyno to not only serve his current purposes, in Late Model and Modified Series, but in higher race series such as Sportsman Super Series and ARCA. This distinction makes design criteria unique for our group because as you go up in series, the competitiveness also goes up. These race car series give the racing community a merit and skill based difference. Series ranking from lowest to highest performance and skill is: Late Model, Modified, Sportsman Super Series, ARCA, and highest being NASCAR.
After a few meetings with Jason we have decided on the design criteria for the dyno and the possible issues we will face within this project. The dyno will have limitations to its design, but will meet the customer requirements set forth in the meeting. It will operate efficiently with safety of the user in mind. A skilled operator or a first time user will be able to use the dyno knowing their safety was the first priority in design considerations.
